Description

Take your singing to the next level in this dynamic winter class designed for teens who love musical theater and want to strengthen their vocal and musicianship skills. Students will focus on building healthy vocal technique—including breath support, tone production, resonance, and stamina—while learning the fundamentals of sight reading and music literacy to become more confident, versatile performers. Students will explore how acting choices influence vocal delivery and interpretation, deepening both their expressiveness and technical control. Each class will combine vocal warm-ups, group harmonies, and solo work to help singers connect emotionally with lyrics while maintaining strong, sustainable vocal habits.

The session culminates in a Winter Showcase performance, where students will demonstrate their growth in vocal technique, musicianship, and storytelling through expressive, character-driven performances.

Teacher:

Kate Colby

Kate Colby is a Lake Charles native and a lifelong musician. She began her music career at the age of eleven, cantoring at local churches and eventually working her way up in the music ministry. In 2020, she received her Bachelor's in Vocal Music Education from McNeese State University. Kate discovered her love of theatre in 2018 when she starred as Mary Lennox in McNeese Theatre's production of "The Secret Garden: The Musical." She has since thrown herself into the local theatre community, working with ACTS Theatre, Lake Charles Little Theatre, and the Lake Charles chapter of CYT. She has been music director for shows such as "Little Shop of Horrors," "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever," SpongeBob: The Musical," "James and the Giant Peach," and others. Kate also continues to take the stage, most recently joining ACTS Theatre in "Anything Goes" and "Songs for a New World." Outside of rehearsal, Kate can be found teaching voice and piano lessons in her private studio, or serving as Minister of Music at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. In her spare time, she enjoys video games, playing Dungeons and Dragons with her friends, and reading. Her family includes a loving, supportive husband (Wesley), a senior corgi (Major) and a mischievous tabby cat (Arlo).
